DIY Summer Hat

I love the style of a wide brim hat, it just seems to have such a chic element to it, especially wearing it on the beach. I have really liked the ones that are a little bit on the plainer side with just a little trim. But instead of paying a lump sum and wanting to do a DIY, I decided to try adding my own trim to a wide brim hat and I have to say I am pretty happy with the results!

Supplies:

  • Plain large brim hat
  • 1″ thick Ribbon (I used a grosgrain ribbon)
  • Matching thread
  • Tacky Glue
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Pins

I used a navy color (hard to tell from the pictures) grosgrain ribbon for my trim. And actually got my plain hat from my trip to South Africa.

I first did the ribbon around the inner part of the hat using the tacky glue, for the end of the ribbon that ends up on top I folded it over to give the edge a polished look.

For the trim around the brim I used a needle and thread, folding the ribbon half way on each side of the brim. this part was a little tedious but it was too thick to put through a sewing machine, so hand sewn it was. You can use pins to hold the ribbon in place, the key is to make sure you use one of the lines from the hat as a guide so that its that same width all the way around on top and bottom.
